Illinois prisoner holds nursing assistant, officer hostage at Presence hospital

Law enforcement officials said a convicted murderer held a nursing assistant and a corrections officer hostage with a makeshift weapon at Joliet, Ill.-based Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Wednesday after the inmate was taken from an Illinois prison to the hospital, Chicago Tribune reports.

The Illinois Department of Corrections said Joshua Matthews, 32, was transported to the hospital Tuesday from the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill, Ill. He is serving a 100-year sentence for a murder in the state's DuPage County.

According to an IDOC news release obtained by Chicago Tribune, at roughly 3:35 a.m. Wednesday Mr. Matthews "displayed a makeshift weapon and informed the assigned correctional officer and a certified nurse's assistant that they were being held hostage." The department said police arrived at about 3:55 a.m., and secured Mr. Matthews and controlled the scene in less than an hour.

No injuries were reported, Chicago Tribune reports. Presence St. Joseph, Joliet police and IDOC are investigating the incident.
