36 recently unsealed False Claims Act cases: 5 takeaways

Thirty-six healthcare lawsuits filed under the qui tam, or whistle-blower, provision of the False Claims Act have been unsealed since May, according to a National Law Review report.

Here are five things to know about the recently unsealed cases.

1. One of the lawsuits was filed in 2006, one was filed in 2009, seven were filed in 2011, three were filed in 2012, and the rest were filed in 2013 or later.

2. The federal government intervened in full in six of the cases and partially intervened in another six cases.

3. Eighteen of the recently unsealed cases involved both state and federal claims.

4. The whistle-blowers in approximately 53 percent of the recently unsealed cases were current or former employees of the defendants, including former executives.

5. The recently unsealed cases were filed in federal district courts in 18 states.
