Mackinac Straits Health to Lay Off 15

Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace, Mich., is laying off 15 employees and reducing the hours of eight others, effective April 1, according to an Up North Live report.

The system is also leaving four positions empty and cutting the salaries of top managers by 5 percent. Employee benefits will also be restructured, according to the report.

Mackinac Straits Health has been affected by "economic downturns" and "state and federal mandates," the president and CEO, Rodney Nelson, told Up North Live. Those issues led to the workforce reduction and cost-saving changes.
