McKesson to purchase Canadian drugstore chain for $2.2B

McKesson plans to take on Canada's pharmaceutical heavyweights in a $2.2 billion deal with Katz Group for its Rexall Health pharmacy chain.

Under the transaction, McKesson will acquire 470 Rexall retail pharmacies and significantly increase McKesson Canada's size, purchasing power and portfolio in the Canadian market. McKesson is currently one of two major national pharmaceutical distributors in Canada.

"With today's announcement, McKesson will bring together the strengths and expertise of our diverse portfolio to address challenges and opportunities in delivering the very best patient care," said McKesson Chairman and CEO John Hammergren.

McKesson plans to maintain the Rexall brand. The acquisition is expected to close later this year.
