The best and worst physician specialists, as ranked by patients

As consumers become more involved in their healthcare and take on more payment responsibility, they are relying on reviews to help them choose a physician.

Vitals recently analyzed roughly 6 million reviews across 40 specialty areas. Physicians were ranked on a five-point scale. Overall scores for specialists ranged from a high of 4.63 to a low of 3.73. Ties are not accounted for in the analysis.

Here are the best and worst ranked physician specialists, according to the analysis.

Highest ranked physician specialists

1. Neuromusculoskeletal specialists

2. Thoracic surgeons

3. Podiatrists

4. Plastic surgeons

5. Colon and rectal surgeons

Lowest ranked physician specialists

1. Psychiatrists

2. Preventative medicine specialists

3. Pain specialists

4. Emergency physicians

5. Neurologists
