Trump: Revised ACA replacement will protect people with pre-existing conditions

President Donald Trump is adamant people with pre-existing conditions will be covered under the GOP's ACA replacement plan, reports The New York Times.

"Pre-existing conditions are in the bill," the president said on CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday, reports NYT. "And I mandate it. I said has to be."

President trump also took to Twitter Sunday, contending a "healthcare plan is on its way" and that the plan "will have much lower premiums & deductibles while at the same time taking care of pre-existing conditions!"

A revised Republican healthcare plan unveiled last week would allow states to seek waivers to opt out of the ACA's community rating rule, which bars insurers from charging different premiums "based on age, gender, health status or other factors." If states receive such waivers, they would be required to have a government-subsidized high-risk pool or a reinsurance program to make health plans more affordable for seriously ill individuals, according to the report.

Those opposed to the revised healthcare plan, offered by a Rep. Tom MacArthur, R-N.J., contend it could essentially mean a person with cancer, diabetes or multiple sclerosis could see premium rates surpassing the standard rate, reports NYT.

"Although the MacArthur Amendment states that the ban on pre-existing conditions remains intact, this assurance may be illusory as health status underwriting could effectively make coverage completely unaffordable to people with pre-existing conditions," the American Medical Association wrote in a letter to House leaders, indicating the AMA's opposition to the revised healthcare bill. "There is also no certainty that the requirement for states to have some kind of reinsurance or high-risk pool mechanism to help such individuals will be sufficient to provide for affordable health insurance or prevent discrimination against individuals with certain high-cost medical conditions. "

The House could potentially vote on the revised healthcare plan this week.
