Trump names Jared Kushner head of innovation office: 4 things to know

President Donald Trump appointed his senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner to lead the White House Office of American Innovation, which launched March 27.

Here are four things to know.

1. The OAI will bring together White House staff and former business executives, who will recommend policies and plans to improve federal services. Internally, the OAI is regarded as a "SWAT team of strategic consultants ... designed to infuse fresh thinking into Washington," according to The Washington Post.

2. The OAI's White House staff includes Assistant to the President for Economic Policy Gary Cohn, Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy Andrew Bremberg and Senior Counselor to the President for Economic Initiatives Dina Powell. Mr. Kushner and these staff members will report directly to President Trump.

3. The OAI is also working with external business executives, many of whom have a focus on technology and data. Its participants include Apple CEO Tim Cook, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates and Tesla Founder and CEO Elon Musk, according to The Washington Post.

4. The office's initial projects include reforming the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; updating the technology and data infrastructure of all federal agencies; developing projects for President Trump's $1 trillion infrastructure plan and addressing the opioid epidemic, according to The Washington Post.

"We should have excellence in government," Mr. Kushner told The Washington Post. "The government should be run like a great American company. Our hope is that we can achieve successes and efficiencies for our customers, who are the citizens."
