7 latest hospital, health system layoffs

The following hospitals and health systems shared plans for or implemented layoffs in May so far, starting with the most recent.

1. Mercy Health to close addiction center, lay off 45 employees: 3 things to know
Mercy Hospital, a Roman Catholic nonprofit community hospital in Portland, Maine, plans to close its substance abuse recovery center in Westbrook, Maine and move some of its services to Mercy's State Street location in Portland. The recovery center's closing, which is partly attributed to low reimbursement rates for addiction services, will affect 90 employees at the Westbrook clinic, 45 of which will be laid off.

2. Lahey Health to lay off 130 employees at 3 hospitals: 4 things to know
Burlington, Mass.-based Lahey Health is laying off 130 people at three hospitals as it works to cut costs. The layoffs represent about 1 percent of Lahey's workforce and include managers, clinicians and administrative staff.

3.Hawaii hospitals to lay off employees, cut services: 4 things to know
Nearly 90 employees will be laid off and some services will be cut at three Hawaii hospitals — Hilo Medical Center, Ka‘u Hospital and Hale Ho‘ola Hamakua — due to a projected $7 million deficit in the fiscal year beginning July 1.

4. Houston long-term hospital to close: 4 things to know
Select Specialty Hospital - Houston Heights, an acute long-term care hospital in Houston, will close this summer. More than 220 employees will be laid off.

5. Lakes Region General Hospital plans workforce adjustment: 3 things to know 
Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H., eliminated 22 positions.

6. Jameson Health System cuts services, jobs
New Castle, Pa.-based Jameson Health System announced its South Campus hospital will no longer be open 24 hours a day, and instead will offer services only during the day on weekdays. Additionally, the South Campus will no longer provide inpatient behavioral health services at any time. According to a news release, "a number of positions" will be cut.

7. Harbor Hospital closes temporarily, lays off employees
Roughly 70 employees at Harbor Hospital, a long-term acute-care facility in Beaumont, Texas, received layoff notices. The hospital closed temporarily after an investigation found patient safety issues.
