14 mistakes top leaders don't make

It makes sense that great leadership produces a positive trickle-down effect; great leadership often leads to superior management, engaged and committed employees and loyal customers.

To prevent a break in this chain, avoid the following 14 flaws, according to Business Insider.

1. Expecting your team care more or work harder than you. Leaders are responsible for setting the tone.

2. Not putting in enough time learning what motivates senior management.

3. Hiring for experience over passion — lengthy resumes don't always equal ideal candidates.

4. Assuming your team and employees understand the expectations you have for them without clearly communicating them.

5. Tolerating passive aggression. It only leads people to become uninspired.

6. Using quotas to set goals instead of encouraging your team to be the best they can possibly be.

7. Settling for "good enough" instead of relentlessly seeking improvement.

8. Not clearly defining what success means to you, your organization and your employees on an individual level. If success isn't personal, people won't perform at their highest level.

9. Waiting too long to let go of employees who aren't meeting your expectations.

10. Letting negative people stick around just because they get the job done. They will make the workplace undesirable for everyone else.

11. Focusing on short-term growth over long-term, sustainable strategy.

12. Not listening to and learning from employees, stakeholders, advisors, patients and even competitors.

13. Excusing or tolerating poor customer service.

14. Letting fear of failure hold you back from making bold moves and acting decisively.
