12 Recent Hospital Layoffs

The following hospital and/or health system layoffs were announced within the past month. They are ranked by the number of employees affected.  

Deadline for Buyouts at Crozer-Keystone Passes; System Reveals Positions Affected

Thirty employees were laid off from Chester, Pa.-based Crozer-Keystone Health System as part of the organization's strategy to trim its workforce by 325. Of those 30, 22 were managers and eight were staff members. Another 99 vacant positions were eliminated, and 216 people — representing 196 full-time equivalents — accepted a buyout offer.  

Sheehan Health in New York Lays Off 147 as Part of Planned Shutdown
Buffalo, N.Y.-based Sheehan Health Network started the elimination of 147 employees as its hospital prepares to close. The system, which includes the 40-bed Sheehan Memorial Hospital, started the eliminations April 3 with the layoff of 100 employees.

In Third Round of Layoffs, Erlanger Health Cuts 142 Employees
Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger Health System is laying off 142 workers as part of its third and last phase of an employee reduction plan expected to save the hospital up to $11.5 million per year. This portion of layoffs is about 3 percent of the system's 4,700 employees

SwedishAmerican Health System in Illinois to Cut 125 Jobs
SwedishAmerican Health System, based in Rockford, Ill., announced the elimination of 49 employees and 76 vacant positions.

Less Than 100 Layoffs Expected at Adventist
Rockville, Md.-based Adventist HealthCare announced plans to eliminate fewer than 100 positions.

Yuma Regional in Arizona Restructures; 78 Employees Affected
Roughly 78 employees at Yuma (Ariz.) Regional Medical Center were affected by layoffs or position relocations. Thirty-three "core employees" were affected by the restructuring. This includes seven positions filled by interim employees, the elimination of two unfilled positions and the layoff of 24 individuals. Another 45 employees in adult acute-care services were affected, with all but three placed in other positions.

Queen of the Valley Medical Center in California to Lay Off 55
Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, Calif., announced plans to eliminate 55 jobs to narrow an $8.3 million budget deficit.

Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston Lays Off Up to 50 Employees
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston laid off 40 to 50 employees and also closed a 24-bed patient unit, relocating those employees.

Lakeside Health in New York to Reduce Work Hours, Lay Off Up to 35
Lakeside Health System of Brockport, N.Y., announced a "financial turnaround" plan involving layoffs and work hour reductions in April. About 10 employees were to be laid off initially and another 25 eliminated within the following few weeks.

Silverton Health in Oregon to Cut 35 Positions
Silverton (Ore.) Health announced plans to eliminate approximately 35 positions following its projection of a $3 million budget shortfall by the end of its fiscal year. The cuts represent 3.5 percent of the system workforce.

Saint Clare's Health in NJ to Turn Hospital Into Outpatient Center; 31 Layoffs Expected
Dover, N.J.-based Saint Clare's Health System confirmed plans to transition its 106-bed hospital in Sussex, N.J., to an outpatient center and lay off up to 31 employees in the process.

Steward's Saint Anne's Hospital Lays Off Unspecified Number of Employees
Saint Anne's Hospital in Fall River, Mass. — part of Boston-based Steward Healthcare — laid off an unspecified number of employees in April. A Steward spokesperson explained the layoffs are not system-wide and are specific to Saint Anne's, a 106-bed community hospital.
