12 Hospitals, Health Systems That Recently Changed Names

The following hospital name changes were announced in the past six months, beginning with the most recent.

1. Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs, Fla., is planning to change its name to Florida Hospital North Pinellas to expand its regional focus and strengthen its branding and marketing. The hospital is part of Adventist Health System.

2. Foundation Surgical Hospital — a physician-owned facility in Bellaire, Texas — announced it would change its name to Houston Orthopedic and Spine Hospital.

3. St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network, based in Allentown, Pa., announced a change in name to become St. Luke's University Health Network. The rename is intended to more accurately convey the system's organizational scope.

4. Auburn (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital changed its name to Auburn Community Hospital to reflect its community connection. The hospital said the name change is not related to its exploration of a strategic affiliation with Rochester General Health System.

5. Minneapolis-based Allina Hospitals and Clinics dropped part of its name to become Allina Health. The system, which is one of Medicare's Pioneer ACOs, said the name change is intended to reflect a broader focus, such as home healthcare delivery and preventive care.

6. Greenville, N.C.-based University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina changed its name to Vidant Health to create a more overarching brand for the system's 10 hospitals.

7. Flint, Mich.-based McLaren Health Care has launched a rebranding campaign in which all 11 hospitals in the system will include "McLaren" in their names. The new names will generally be a pairing of "McLaren" and the facility's location.

8. Mercy Northwest Arkansas, based in Rogers, Ark., announced it would simply be called Mercy in January — renaming more than 30 hospitals throughout Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma to reflect a new brand.

9. Norton Healthcare, based in Louisville, Ky., is rebranding its 343-bed Suburban Hospital by dedicating it to women and children. The women's component of services will be named Norton Women's Hospital, while the pediatric component will be named Kosair Children's Hospital-St. Matthews.

10. Martin Memorial Health System in Stuart, Fla., is changing its name to Martin Health System to reflect the system's "enhanced scope of services," which has grown to include hospitals, physician offices, rehabilitation centers and other services.

11. Innova Hospital San Antonio (Texas) announced a change in name to become Victory Medical Center-San Antonio.

12. Hutcheson Medical Center in Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., took on a new name — Erlanger at Hutcheson — as part of a rebranding campaign.
