11 emerging roles in healthcare

The transition from volume to value has created the need for a variety of new roles within the healthcare ecosystem, and while healthcare leaders are aware of the need for these roles, many organizations haven't yet recruited, hired or trained employees for these new responsibilities, according a new survey of more than 300 human resources and clinical leaders.

Results of the survey, performed by the The Center for Professional Advancement, were released at the Healthcare Workforce Summit hosted by AMN in Washington, D.C., last week.

The survey identified 11 emerging roles in healthcare including:

Clinical care roles
Care coordinator
Navigator
Health coach
Medical scribe
Telehealth-trained physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant or RN

Technology roles
Clinical documentation specialist
ICD-10 coder

Leadership roles
Chief population health officer
Chief experience officer
Chief clinical transformation officer
Chief strategy officer

According to the survey, 86 percent of leaders are aware of the growing need of new types of healthcare workers. However, the majority of organizations have yet to onboard these roles into their organization.

For example, just 12 percent of respondents reported currently recruiting telehealth-trained physicians, and just 10 percent are recruiting telehealth-trained RNs.

Among clinical and technology roles, ICD-10 coders and care coordinators specialists represented the most recruited roles, with 30 percent and 27 percent of organizations recruiting these roles, respectively.
