Why this former Twitter exec left to work for a biotech company

Katie Jacobs Stanton, a former Twitter executive, wants to change the world with technology.

"In Silicon Valley, everyone talks about Google, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter — and they are missing it," she said, according to Fortune. "They are missing this very important trend that is actually going to save people's lives. So we want to get ahead of that."

Throughout her career, Ms. Stanton has worked in tech companies across the board, including Google and Yahoo. She most recently served as Twitter's vice president of global media, a position she held until February.

"When I left Twitter, I had no idea. I thought I would continue in media or some kind of tech company, but then I took a step back," she said, according to the report.

That step back led her to realize she wanted to use technology to solve life's greater problems — like healthcare. So she joined Color Genomics, a genetic cancer testing company, and will officially become its chief marketing officer next month.

Through Color Genomics, customers can purchase mail-in spit kits, which the company uses to detect whether they carry gene mutations associated with certain types of cancer. The kits can identify 19 gene types. Though they only cost $249 each, customers must order them through their physician.
