More than $5 million has been given to a number of universities by the National Science Foundation to create four regional big data hubs, according to a Network World report.
Here are five things to know.
1. The regional data hubs will be designed to use big data across several industries such as agriculture and healthcare, according to the report.
2. The National Science Foundation awards are being given as a part of the National Big Data Research and Development Initiative.
3. The universities that will help establish the hubs include:
• Columbia University in New York (Northeast hub)
• Georgia Tech in Atlanta and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (South hub)
• University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Midwest hub)
• University of California, Berkeley (West hub)
4. The universities will be supported by more than 250 organizations across the country. These organizations will help the data hubs translate research into practice.
5. The National Science Foundation also plans to grant $10 million more to establish Big Data Spokes, which will be focused on specific research areas, according to the report.
