Meet the startup that's paying people to answer questions

Seattle-based Mighty AI needs data to set up an effective artificial intelligence software. But where can it get such data? Subject matter experts.

The startup, formerly known as Spare5, is paying various specialists to answer short questions or complete tasks, according to Bloomberg. Mighty AI currently has more than 100,000 experts in 155 countries.

The data-gathering concept stemmed from a project Mighty AI completed for IBM. IBM wanted to develop a chat bot for fans at the 2016 Masters golf tournament. The company couldn't find enough golf-related data, however, and sent Mighty AI a chunk of golf information to analyze. "Mighty AI found workers familiar with golf, had them tag information specific to the sport and compose questions and answers based on the material," according to Bloomberg.

Since then, Mighty AI has been deploying the same technique as it works with other companies.

The company recently added three new investors — Intel Capital, Accenture Ventures and Google Ventures — and plans to unveil upcoming partnerships with Intel and Accenture.
