Survey: Security concerns stop 30% of American families from paying bills online

Online privacy and security concerns have prevented millions of U.S. residents from using internet services to pay bills, reports The Hill.

That finding comes from a survey conducted by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. NTIA used data gathered by the Census Bureau in 2015 on 41,000 homes that reported using internet services.

Below are four survey findings.

1. Of respondents, nearly 30 percent said they had chosen not to conduct financial transactions online due to privacy and security concerns.

2.  About 26 percent said they had chosen not to shop online or post on social media due to the same concerns.

3. The survey found people were less likely to engage in financial transactions or post on social media if they were victims of a data breach within the past year.

4. Nineteen million households reported having been affected by some type of online security breach within the past year.
