Rush University Medical Center sees operating gains in FY 2015

Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center reported operating income of $92.6 million on revenue of $2.1 billion for the fiscal year that ended June 30, compared to operating income of $82.5 million on $2 billion in revenue the previous year.

Rush reported a 4.4 percent operating margin for the most-recent fiscal year, up from a 4.2 percent operating margin in 2014.

The system's finances received a boost from a 5.3 percent increase in net patient service revenue in FY 2015 compared to last year. That was largely attributable to a 2.9 percent uptick in admissions and an increase in emergency department activity.

After accounting for a $117.7 million loss on extinguishment of debt, Rush ended the fiscal year with a $17 million net loss. That's compared to a net surplus of $132.4 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014.
