Positive hospital rating actions outpace negative ones in past month

There were 38 hospital rating actions in the past 30 days: 24 positive and 14 negative, according to a report from HFA Partners.

The rating actions included many outlook revisions, watches, and reviews, as well as eight credit downgrades and 10 credit upgrades.

The following eight hospitals and health systems received a credit downgrade during the past month:

  • Brazosport Regional Health System (Lake Jackson, Texas)— from BB+ to BB (S&P)
  • East Liverpool (Ohio) City Hospital — from B2 to Caa1 (Moody's)
  • Floyd Memorial Hospital (New Albany, Ind.) — from BBB to BBB- (S&P)
  • MaineGeneral Medical Center (Augusta) — from Ba1 to Ba2 (Moody's)
  • Memorial Hospital at Gulfport (Miss.) — from A2 to A3 (Moody's)
  • Metropolitan Health Corp. — (Wyoming, Mich.) from BB+ to BB (S&P)
  • Parish Medical Center (Titusville, Fla.) — from A- to BBB+ (S&P)
  • Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (Albany, Ga.) — from AA- to A+ (S&P)

The following 10 hospitals and health systems received a credit upgrade during the past month:

  • Children's National Medical Center (Washington, D.C.) — from A to A+ (Fitch)
  • Good Samaritan Hospital (San Jose, Calif.) — from BB to BB+ (S&P)
  • Mercy Medical Center (Canton, Ohio) — from BB to BBB- (S&P)
  • Meritus Health Inc. (Hagerstown, Md.) — from BBB- to BBB (S&P)
  • Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare (Memphis, Tenn.) — from A2 to A1 (Moody's)
  • Nebraska Methodist Health System (Omaha) — from BBB+ to A- (S&P)
  • South Lake Hospital (Clermont, Fla.) — from BBB+ to A- (Fitch)
  • St Francis Regional Medical Center (Shakopee, Minn.) — from BBB+ to A- (S&P)
  • St. Luke's Episcopal-Presbyterian Hospital (Chesterfield, Mo.) — from A to A+ (S&P) 
  • University of Vermont Medical Center (Burlington) — from BBB+ to A- (S&P)
