Illinois' Memorial Medical Center loses $1M per month following departure of cardiologist group

Springfield, Ill.-based Memorial Medical Center is "seeing deterioration" in its margin after approximately 30 cardiologists left the hospital, Memorial Health System CEO Edgar Curtis told The State Journal-Register.

The Prairie Cardiovascular group, owned by Springfield-based Hospital Sisters Health System, moved all inpatient care to Springfield-based HSHS St. John's Hospital March 1. As a result, Memorial Medical Center saw cardiology inpatient profits drop roughly $1 million per month during the past five months.

While 500-bed Memorial Medical Center has not laid anyone off due to the decreased profits, Mr. Curtis said the hospital chose to not replace some employees who left through attrition. Those positions do not include employees who directly care for patients, the report states.
