Cook Medical Center in Georgia to close ER as losses mount

Cook Medical Center in Adel, Ga., part of Tift Regional Health System in Tifton, Ga., will close its emergency room Feb. 28.

The 61-bed hospital's emergency services will be consolidated with services at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton. Tift Regional Medical Center is about 27 miles away from Cook Medical Center.

Chris Dorman, senior vice president and COO of Tift Regional Health System, said Cook Medical Center has incurred annual losses of about $2.6 million since 2012. He said the ER has been the main contributor to the hospital's financial troubles.

Cook Medical Center CEO Michael Purvis said closing the ER helps ensure long-term sustainability of the hospital.

Since 2012, six rural hospitals in Georgia have closed.
