Chief human resources officers at Fortune 500 companies see higher turnover than other C-suite roles, with 9% of tenures lasting six months or less, according to a February 2025 report from executive search firm Spencer Stuart.
That compares to an average of 7% for all C-suite roles across Fortune 500 companies. CHROs also had a slightly lower average tenure — 4.7 years — compared to the 4.9-year average for all C-suite executives.
The analysis reflects executives in their roles as of June 30, 2024. When companies had co-C-suite roles, both leaders were included. In total, the report analyzed 501 CEOs, 234 COOs, 492 CFOs and 485 CHROs.
As workforce shortages and burnout continue to challenge hospitals and health systems, alignment between HR executives and CEOs is critical to advancing staff-focused initiatives.
Hospital and health system CHROs recently told Becker’s that top workforce trends to watch in 2025 include reducing healthcare costs for employees, addressing staffing gaps through creative recruitment and retention strategies, and supporting employee financial well-being.
