Only 6% of Generation Z members cite becoming a leader as their primary career goal, according to Deloitte’s 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey.

Still, Gen Z remains focused on growth and continued learning, the survey found. The findings are based on responses from 14,751 Gen Zers and 8,731 millennials across 44 countries.

Online surveys were conducted from Oct. 25 to Dec. 24, with qualitative interviews taking place between December and January. Respondents ranged from students and unemployed individuals to leaders at large organizations.

Five takeaways from the global survey:

1. While many Gen Z employees are not striving for leadership roles, learning and development ranked among the top three reasons they chose their current employer.

2. Seven in 10 Gen Zers said they are developing skills to advance their careers at least once a week, compared to 6 in 10 millennials.

3. More than 80% of Gen Z and millennial respondents said the following tools are very or somewhat helpful for career growth:

  • On-the-job learning and practical experience
  • Mentorship and guidance from colleagues
  • Performance review and feedback
  • Collaboration and peer learning
  • Formal training programs

4. Thirty-one percent Gen Z employees plan to change employers within the next two years, compared to 17% of millennials. Pay, meaning and well-being were the top factors influencing both generations to change employers or careers.

5. Both generations are seeking purpose-driven work, with more than half rating meaningful work as very important. Purpose also plays a key role in well-being and job satisfaction for 92% of millennials and 89% of Gen Zers.
