Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare to host job fair in wake of hurricane

Tallahassee (Fla.) Memorial HealthCare, a private, nonprofit community health system, will host a job fair this month to attract people seeking employment after Hurricane Michael, according to a Tallahassee Democrat report.

The job fair also follows Panama City, Fla.-based Bay Medical Sacred Heart's announcement Dec. 4 that it expects to lay off 635 staff members in 2019 once it reopens. Bay Medical, a 323-bed hospital, sustained damage during Hurricane Michael and will reopen in stages after Jan. 1. It will reopen at one-fourth its previous size.

Steve Capenos, Tallahassee Memorial's director of the Center for Healthcare Careers, told the Democrat a job fair was planned before Bay Medical's announcement, but "the timing of the layoff makes this event more of a need than we anticipated."

The job fair is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 12 at St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club in Panama City. According to Tallahassee Memorial, available positions include registered nurses, patient care assistants, medical assistants, surgical, laboratory, monitor and cardiovascular technicians, as well as nonclinical roles.

The health system, which is building a surgical center, is hiring for current and future staffing needs.
