The Greenhouse State of Job Hunting 2024 report surveyed 2,500 full-time employed adults in the U.S., United Kingdom and Germany.
Of those surveyed, 71% of Generation Z job seekers in the U.S. believe they have encountered a ghost job. Among all U.S. respondents, 29% said they applied for a role they suspected was a ghost job, while 31% saw one and did not apply.
Some ghost jobs may be posted to comply with federal law requiring certain roles to be publicly advertised, even when an internal candidate has been determined, The Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 12. Organizations may also advertise for ghost jobs to give the impression of growth.
