Hahnemann support staff not optimistic about new jobs amid hospital closure plans

As the planned closure of Philadelphia-based Hahnemann University Hospital moves forward, support staff from the 496-bed academic medical center have reported struggles in finding new jobs, according to TV station WHYY.

Edwina Snell, who works in finance at Hahnemann and has been at the hospital 30 years, told the TV station during the "Hire Hahnemann" job fair July 25 in Philadelphia that "some people are going to luck up" in finding news jobs. But she was reportedly not optimistic about herself.

According to WHYY, support employees in housekeeping or dietary services also did not appear confident at the job fair after seeing various employers recruiting nurses.

Philadelphia Academic Health System, a subsidiary of American Academic Health System, announced in June that it plans to close Hahnemann in early September. The closure will leave more than 2,500 people without jobs by that time, according to WHYY. Philadelphia Academic Health System included Hahnemann in a June 30 Chapter 11 bankruptcy case filing. St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, which Philadelphia Academic Health System plans to sell, was also included.

Still, Patrick Clancy, president and CEO of Philadelphia Works, one of the organizers of the job fair, told the TV station he was hopeful the job fair could help employees.
