Best workplaces for disability inclusion: 15 health systems

Fifteen health systems were named among the top U.S. workplaces for disability inclusion by the 2023 Disability Equality Index, a joint initiative with the American Association of People with Disabilities.

This year, 485 companies participated in the index. Companies are assessed for disability inclusion across six categories. Five are weighted: culture and leadership, enterprise-wide access, community engagement, supplier diversity and employment practices. Employment practices carry the most weight, accounting for benefits, recruitment, retention, education, advancement and accommodations. One non-weighted measure — non-U.S. operations — is also included in the index.

Hospitals and health systems that scored 100 percent: 

  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia 
  • Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee)
  • HCA Healthcare (Nashville, Tenn.) 
  • Highmark Health (Pittsburgh) 
  • Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.) 
  • Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.) 
  • Novant Health (Winston-Salem, N.C.) 
  • Spaulding Rehabilitation Network (Boston)

Hospitals and health systems that scored 90 percent: 

  • Baylor Scott & White Health (Dallas) 
  • Northwestern Medicine (Chicago) 
  • Norton Healthcare (Louisville, Ky.)
  • Shepherd Center (Atlanta) 
  • The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston)

Hospitals and health systems that scored 80 percent: 

  • Allina Health (Minneapolis) 
  • Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)
