UPMC Transcriptionists Protest Wage Changes Post-Outsourcing

Pittsburgh-based UPMC's former transcriptionists, who were outsourced to Nuance in July, protested Wednesday outside UPMC's corporate offices this week, according to a WESA report.

As part of the outsourcing plan, all of UPMC's transcriptionists — about 130 employees — were offered jobs at Nuance. However, after three months, they would no longer be paid hourly at Nuance; instead, they would receive four or eight cents for each line of text they typed, according to the report.

The wage change, which became effective this month, resulted in much lower paychecks for the transcriptionists.

About 50 people attended Wednesday's protest, which was organized by the Service Employees International Union, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.

This is not the first rally resulting from the outsourcing: workers rallied against the move in July as well.
