Allegheny Health Network Furloughs 262

Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network has furloughed 262 employees and eliminated another 200 vacant positions within West Penn Allegheny Health System, according to a Pittsburgh Business Times report.

The workforce changes will affect each of the five hospitals within West Penn, which is owned by Pittsburgh-based health insurer Highmark. A spokesperson said few jobs involved in patient care will be affected, according to the report.

Highmark officially acquired West Penn this spring. The system booked an operating loss of $99 million for the nine months ending March 31, according to the report. The latest employment changes are part of a systemwide effort to improve its financial standing, according to the report.

AHN employs about 10,300 people.
