Beyond compensation: What senior leaders say keeps physicians from leaving

Turnover has climbed in recent years, and 44% of physicians are actively looking for a new job. Each departure can cost a health system up to nearly $1 million in recruitment, onboarding and lost productivity and revenue.

Compensation is part of the story — but only part. Roughly one-third of physicians cite pay as a primary driver for changing jobs, which points to factors leaders can influence directly.

To understand what actually works, Becker’s Healthcare convened senior clinical and business leaders from provider organizations across the country. They shared the retention strategies that work, from flexible scheduling and lighter administrative burden to flexible concierge models — arrangements that let physicians spend more time with a smaller panel of patients while generating new revenue.
