Downed power lines leave businesses, children's hospital in perilous situation following Hurricane Maria: 6 notes

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico Sept. 20 as a Category 4 storm. Extreme flooding and strong winds knocked out power lines across the island, forcing many businesses to turn to alternative sources of power, if capable.

Here are six developments since the storm.

1. San Juan Mayor Carmen Cruz told MSNBC half the city was underwater Wednesday and the island may be without electricity for four to six months, NBC News reports.

2. Many businesses, including hospitals, were forced to rely on backup generators, if available. An administrator at the San Juan-based San Jorge Children's Hospital told NPR the hospital has been without power since 2 a.m. Wednesday. He said the hospital "so far … is working as normal as possible, all things considered."

3. The administrator said the generator is able to provide the hospital with 100 percent of its electricity needs, including air conditioning. However, he noted the external source serves as a backup source of power, meaning it will only be able to keep the hospital running for "two, three, four days at the most," the report states.

4. If electricity doesn't return to the island for months, as some experts projected, the administrator told NPR the situation would be "catastrophic."

"Some hospitals will have to shut down. ... If we don't get power within a week or two, I'm sure hospitals will have to shut down and will have to transfer patients to other hospitals in Puerto Rico or outside Puerto Rico," the administrator said.

5. Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello implemented a curfew until at least Saturday while officials survey storm damage, according to The Washington Post.

6. President Donald Trump declared a "major disaster" in Puerto Rico Sept. 20 and directed additional federal funds to aid the territory in recovery.
