3 New Jersey hospitals may move toward outpatient care

Three Newark, N.J.-area hospitals may in the future offer only outpatient services, according to NJ Spotlight.

In a report released Monday, Navigant Consulting recommended transforming Newark (N.J.) Beth Israel Medical Center, East Orange (N.J.) General Hospital and Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark into ambulatory care centers.

The report also recommended expanding Newark-based Broadway House's role to include post-acute care and expansion of the University Hospital campus in Newark to accommodate Newark Beth Israel Medical Center's inpatient services. Broadway House is New Jersey’s only specialized facility for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Navigant said it believes the recommendations provide a way to reduce unnecessary duplication of services in the Newark area "in an orderly manner to better align resources with needs."

The recommendations are meant to build on and complement each other and may be implemented sequentially, concurrently or in combination, Navigant said.
