The White House issued an executive order March 19 aimed at strengthening cybersecurity and protecting critical infrastructure from cyberattacks.

The order calls on states and communities to take the lead in safeguarding infrastructure and addressing risks such as cyberattacks, natural disasters and space weather.

Here are three things to know about the executive order:

  1. A National Resilience Strategy will be developed within 90 days to outline priorities for securing infrastructure against cyber threats.

  2. Federal policies on cybersecurity, national preparedness and emergency response will be reviewed and updated to improve efficiency and coordination.

  3. A National Risk Register will be created to assess and quantify cyber risks, helping guide government and private sector investments in stronger defenses. The goal is to streamline federal operations and empower local decision-making to better safeguard the nation from cyber threats.

The order comes as the healthcare industry continues to grapple with cybersecurity threats. A February report from Black Kite found that healthcare remains the top target for third-party breaches.
