The center would include three facilities: a multidisciplinary outpatient clinic, a research tower and a hospital tower dedicated to oncology patients. An ambulatory care clinic would also be built to provide outpatient services for other specialties.
The project is estimated to cost roughly $370 million, 85 percent of which would come from private funds. The medical centers are seeking $50 million from the state to support construction of the research tower.
Hospital leaders estimate the cancer center project will create approximately 1,200 new jobs by 2020 and add $100 million annually to Nebraska’s economy.
UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center aim for the facility to be designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute by 2020. Currently, only 40 cancer centers in the United States carry this designation.
