That money included court-ordered repayments or agreements to pay and was gleaned through cases investigated by Office of Inspector General staff.

The OIG uncovered an additional $1.33 billion in audit recoveries that HHS’ program managers agreed to pursue in disallowances, for a combined return on investment of $17 for every $1 the agency spent in fiscal 2008.

The 19-page annual performance report revealed that the OIG issued 45 evaluation reports, 381 final audits and received 4,832 complaints, while closing 1,922 cases.
