FBI notified after New Jersey health system breach

Camden, N.J.-based Cooper University Health Care is notifying patients of a data breach that occurred in 2024 after determining that personal and health information may have been exposed.

Here are five things to know:

  1. According to a May 23 press release, Cooper discovered suspicious activity on its network in May 2024 and immediately took steps to secure its systems. The health system launched an investigation with assistance from third-party cybersecurity experts.

  2. On March 26, the organization concluded its review of the affected data and identified the individuals whose information may have been compromised. The breach is believed to have occurred around May 14, 2024.

  3. Potentially accessed information includes names, birth dates, Social Security numbers, insurance details, medical records and treatment history. Not all data types were exposed for every patient.

  4. Cooper reported the incident to the FBI and is cooperating with the agency.

  5. In response to the incident, Cooper has enhanced its cybersecurity protocols to prevent future breaches.
