The hospital is hiring new physicians, building a fitness center and building relationships with local clinics to enhance cardiac care. The hospital is also planning to introduce new procedures such as cardiac MRI and create a suite for angiography. Downtown Hospital believes these changes will attract Asian-Americans, which account for 60 percent of the hospital’s patients, according to the report.

The hospital is targeting Asian-Americans because they often dismiss symptoms of heart disease due to cultural differences in “complaining” about health problems, a lack of education about heart disease and fear of tests and procedures, according to cardiologists Warren Chin, MD, and Cynthia Zhang, MD, who were cited in the report.
