Corewell Health has shared plans to open its first full-service, school-based clinic April 21 at Harper Woods High School.
The on-site clinic near Detroit will provide more than 2,700 students enrolled in the school district — and others — with various medical services and mental health counseling, according to a health system news release shared with Becker’s.
The clinic, aimed at addressing healthcare needs in a disproportionately affected socioeconomic area, will focus on preventing, identifying and treating conditions that can hinder a student’s ability to learn.
Corewell employees will staff the clinic, according to the release. It will serve students and Wayne County residents ages 5 to 21, as well as students with disabilities through age 26. It will also offer physicals, immunizations and health education.
Building out the clinic cost $350,000, covered by grant funds from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, a Corewell spokesperson told Becker’s.
The annual operating cost for the clinic is approximately $400,000, also covered by MDHHS grant funds, she said.
Corewell is a 21-hospital health system based in Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich. In addition to the new clinic, the health system has a school-linked teen health center in Wayne County and operates seven behavioral health school clinics in Southeast Michigan.
