Cardiovascular Certification Program Will Eliminate Groundless “Center of Excellence” Titles

To prevent terms such as “Stroke Center of Excellence” being employed for hospital marketing purposes, the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association are developing a comprehensive certification program to reinforce standards for cardiovascular and stroke care, according to a Bloomberg Businessweek report.

The joint program, which is expected to take two years to develop, would help ensure hospitals are providing excellent evidence-based care, and will factor in patient safety and favorable patient outcomes.

A review of data found no correlation between a hospital’s designation as a heart attack or stroke care center and the care the hospital the hospital provided or the patient mortality rate, according to the report.

The program will be developed in partnership with other medical organizations, such as the Joint Commission, according to an American Heart Association news release.
