Better Outcomes Seen in Hospitals With High Volume of Heart, Pneumonia Patients

Hospitals that treat high volumes of patients with heart attack, heart failure or pneumonia tend to have better outcomes than those that see fewer such cases, according to a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

However, outcomes level out when volume reaches a certain threshold and some hospitals with small volumes also have better outcomes.

Although the relationship between volume and outcomes in surgery is well known, less is known about the relationship between volume and outcomes for medical conditions.
