A survey of physicians in Washington state found fewer than 50 percent are aware of the guidelines and only 6 percent follow them completely, according to the report. The AHA’s guidelines on sudden cardiac risk screening, which include a physical examination and collecting thorough medical and family histories, have been in place since 1996.

Some physicians advocate education and standardization of protocols among states and schools to improve screening.
