For their study, researchers at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center reviewed records of patients presenting to the hospital’s emergency department two weeks during EHR implementation and one year after implementation.
Results of their analysis showed that admitted patients’ and discharged patients’ length of stay was 6-20 percent and 12-22 percent longer during EHR implementation, respectively. Researchers also found diverting patients to another clinic did not help alleviate bottle necks in the emergency department during this time.
