In the 2017 performance year, 472 ACOs covering 9 million beneficiaries participated in the MSSP program, according to the National Association of ACOs. The ACOs achieved gross savings of $1.1 billion, with $800 million in shared savings bonuses paid to ACOs. Sixty percent of ACOs saved money in 2017 and 34 percent earned shared savings. That’s up from 56 percent and 31 percent in 2016, respectively.
The most recent results show ACOs that participate in the program for a longer period of time are more likely to earn shared savings and save Medicare money, according to NAACOs.
