Indiana claims Nantworks failed to fulfill promises to state, seeks $1.4M

The Vigo County Redevelopment Commission in Indiana filed a lawsuit against Nantworks Terre Haute, alleging the company breached its contract when it failed to create up to 234 jobs by the end of 2016, according to Tribune Star.

In 2012, Nantworks announced plans to invest $120 million to locate to a new pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in the county. Under the agreement, the company purchased the former Pfizer building, which was assessed at $6.5 million, for $1 under the condition it would create 234 jobs in the Vigo County Industrial Park. If Nantworks failed to keep its side of the bargain, the company would pay back $5,128 to the Redevelopment Commission per employee under that threshold.

The pharmaceutical plant in Indiana, however, never went through, and with no jobs created, the commission is seeking nearly $1.2 million, as well as unpaid real estate taxes and other penalties totaling $196,865. The lawsuit, in total, requests damages of more than $1.39 million plus interest, attorney fees and court fees.

According to commission members Friday, negotiations have not fostered any action from Nantworks, Tribune Star reports.

Jeffry Lind, attorney for the redevelopment commission, said "there were potential opportunities for other prospects that might have worked with Nantworks to bring jobs. That has come to nothing. Our last [correspondence] to them has gotten no response," he said.
