The commissioners discussed the proposal at the Aspen Ideas Festival’s Spotlight Health on Saturday in Colorado.
Members of the alliance included almost every FDA commissioner dating back to President Ronald Reagan’s second term in office.
Frustration over bureaucratic micromanagement and unclear budgetary boundaries prompted the recommendation.
Robert Califf, MD, current commissioner of the FDA, was present at the event but did not join the alliance’s call to elevate the agency to a federal body.
