FDA launches Drugs@FDA Express app with prescription, OTC drug information

The FDA rolled out a smartphone app March 22 to provide information about prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

The app, called Drugs@FDA Express, is a slimmed down version of the agency's Drugs@FDA webpage. On the app, users will be able to search for information on FDA-approved brand and generic drugs and biological therapeutics. Drugs@FDA Express will also feature recent FDA product approvals from the past week, along with answers to frequently asked questions.

In a March 22 statement, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, suggested convenient access to drug information through the Drugs@FDA Express app will "empower patients and providers in making their treatment decisions."

"Advancing mobile apps that inform people about their health and medical choices represents a significant public health opportunity and is a high priority for the FDA," he said. "The FDA is continuously seeking ways to bring information to consumers in more accessible formats."

The app is available for download on iTunes and Google Play app stores at no cost.
