Tampa General CEO wants to create a medical district

Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital's chief executive has a vision for downtown Tampa to attract more physicians and researchers to the area, according to a report from the Tampa Bay Times.

Tampa General CEO John Couris told the hospital board he envisions creating a medical district with the help of Tampa-based University of South Florida Health. Tampa General has already started strengthening its relationship with USF by leasing 25,000 square feet  for $20 million in a new building owned by USF's medical school.

The organizations plan to create a management services organization to enhance care coordination and patient handoffs. The move would help make data-sharing easier and smooth scheduling for physicians who have privileges at both USF and Tampa General.

He envisions eventually expanding the partnership to other hospitals and health systems, naming Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital as a potential partner. Together, the organizations could create a medical district in Tampa, which Mr. Couris believes will attract more public-private research collaborations and physicians.
