South Carolina hospital restructures nursing leadership

Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, S.C., changed up its nursing leadership structure, which affects 44 of the 66 nurses in administrative roles, according to The Times and Democrat.

Of the 44 nurses who will be affected, 30 will be given the option to continue in their leadership role or to become a bedside nurse, while the rest will be given the chance to look for other positions at the hospital.

Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Dana Dalton told the publication that when she began her role three months ago, she noticed that the nursing structure was lopsided, with 20 percent of the nurses in leadership and administration roles.

"You really had an inordinate amount of people that were spinning their wheels not knowing which direction they needed to go, not knowing what initiatives they were driving, or what they were responsible for," Ms. Dalton said to The Times and Democrat.

Additionally, there were many nurses in leadership positions who did not have the advanced degrees needed to fulfill their duties.

Ms. Dalton told The Times and Democrat that while there have been some nurses who were not pleased with the restructuring, most jumped on board after she explained why the changes were taking place.
