Corporations unsure whether to wade into the abortion debate

Many organizations chose to stay silent when the Supreme Court's draft ruling overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked, indicating a hesitancy of corporations to make a clear stand on the issue, reported The New York Times May 4.

Some cultural movements like #MeToo or Black Lives Matter prompted big companies to make public statements and change policies related to the issues at hand. However, the most recent cultutral issue of abortion rights has left organizations confused and silent.

Mostly women-centered companies or women who run big organizations have spoken out on the topic, with dating service OkCupid calling the draft unacceptable and Sheyl Sandberg, COO of Meta, writing it was a "scary day for women."

Most Fortune 500 companies have remained silent, including Walmart, Disney, Meta, PwC and Salesforce. Among the few Fortune 500 companies that released statements, Airbnb assured employees that they would have the resources to make decisions regarding their reproductive health and Amazon said they will reimburse the travel expenses of those who get non-life threatening medical treatments, including abortions.
