Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health has partnered with Compass Surgical Partners and local physicians to open an orthopedic surgery center in Newport News, Va.
The new ASC will offer total joint replacements, specialty orthopedics that include upper and lower extremities, and spine and pain management, according to a Sept. 30 joint news release.
The organizations said they have secured a certificate of public need through the Virginia Department of Health for the 20,000-square-foot-facility, with physicians accepting first cases earlier this month. Leaders said the effort will broaden the region’s access to advanced, cost-effective surgical care.
“I’ve dedicated my career to advancing minimally invasive techniques that allow patients to recover faster and stay in the comfort of their own homes,” Jeffrey Carlson, MD, a partner on the new facility and spine surgery specialist at Orthopaedic & Spine Center in Newport News, said in the release. “With the new Coastal Virginia Surgery Center, we’ll be able to safely expand same-day spine procedures, reducing both hospital stays and recovery times while delivering exceptional outcomes.”
Bon Secours Mercy joins a growing list of systems broadening their ambulatory footprints as demand accelerates for lower-cost, high-quality surgical care. Outpatient care is projected to grow faster than any other healthcare segment over the next decade, according to Sg2, prompting systems to scale investments in ASCs, urgent care centers and virtual care.
