VA Pays $940k in Malpractice Claims Stemming From Dayton VA Hospital

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has paid $940,000 to settle medical malpractice lawsuits stemming from patient deaths at the Dayton (Ohio) VA Medical Center between 2005 and 2008, according to a Dayton Daily News report.

While four other patients have received settlement payments for other injuries, the hospital has faced 72 medical malpractice claims since January 2007. Of these, 22 claims involved the medical center's dental clinic. Last year, the medical center publicly disclosed that dentist Dwight Pemberton, DDS, violated infection control policies, including proper cleaning of tools and equipment. The internal probe led to testing more than 500 veterans for bloodborne infection, such as HIV and hepatitis.

While the VA said these malpractice claims represent a small portion of all healthcare delivered since 2007, it said it would take every case seriously, according to the report.
